Resources for Career Advisors
Haoa he mahi kaimoana - Catch a seafood job!
A career in Aotearoa’s seafood industry is exciting, hands-on and full of opportunity whether you’re out on the water or working with fresh kaimoana on land.
Seafood careers
There are many ways for students to build a career in seafood, whether they enjoy practical work, solving problems, working with people, or science and technology.
Those who like being outdoors and working with their hands could start as a deckhand and progress to skipper, or train as a marine engineer and work towards chief engineer. On land, people can start on the factory floor and move into management, or build careers in quality assurance, logistics, or getting seafood to market. Students who love science, maths and the environment could study fish populations and help shape how our fisheries are managed.
If you or your students are keen to hear directly from those working in the seafood industry and to find out what it’s really like, check out our videos and other details, including job descriptions and entry requirements on our Careers page.
Teachers can also access a range of activities and lesson plans on our Resources for Teachers page.
