For: Years 3 – 8

Students begin to understand:

  • New Zealand’s fisheries are managed by the Quota Management System (QMS)
  • The QMS is a scientific approach to make sure there are enough fish for us and future generations.
  • How to identify some common fish species of Aotearoa

Length of game:  10  – 15 mins

Materials

  • Paperclips
  • 10 small magnets
  • 10 bamboo poles / sticks
  • String
  • Timer
  • Container for teams to put their fish in
  • Printable resources

Set Up

  1. Print these resources
  2. Cut out the fish and sharks and attach a paper clip to each
  3. Tie string to bamboo poles and a magnet to the end

How To Play

  1. The game is best played with a group of around 10 students in teams of 3 – 4.
  2. Teams draw a Quota Card
  3. Teams read the description and then identify their fish using the Fish ID Cards.  Students can use Parts of Fish to help with identification.
  4. Teams have 5 minutes to catch their quota.  They need to check the size of their fish against the Fish Size card.
  5. If at the end of 5 minutes teams have caught more than their quota,  any undersized fish, or species not on their quota card they are out
  6. If they catch a great white shark (one of our protected species)  they are automatically out.
  7. Teams who catch their quota with no undersized fish win
