Entry Requirements
In most cases you need to hold a Marine Engineer Class 4 (MEC 4). You will need Marine Engineering Class 2 (MEC 2) if the vessel is over 200kW.
To achieve MEC 4 you need:
Sea Service
Option 1 — 12 months on vessels of 250 kW or more operating beyond restricted limits while holding MEC 5 or equivalent.
Option 2 — 12 months on vessels of 250 kW or more operating beyond restricted limits with evidence of successful completion of shore-based engineering training.
Option 3 — 24 months on vessels of 250 kW or more operating beyond restricted limits while holding MEC 6 or equivalent.
Qualification
NZ Diploma in Marine Engineering (Level 6)
Where can I study?
Ancillary and other certificates
- STCW-F basic safety training
- proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats (other than fast rescue boats)
- advanced fire fighting
Career Progression
To progress to second engineer, you will have to complete the Marine Engineer Class 6 (MEC6)
