A job on a fishing vessel is hard work but for many people, it’s the adventure of a lifetime. You might find yourself fishing for scampi near the Auckland Islands or closer to home fishing for snapper in the Tasman Bay.
Finding your sealegs can take a bit of time but there’s always support available to you.
Fishing skippers may do some or all of the following:
- hire, direct and mentor crew
- navigate fishing boats to and from fishing grounds
- manage the deck and fishing duties
- record fish catches and keep quality records
- ensure the ship is properly equipped and maintained
- ensure the health and safety of the crew
- undertake maintenance and emergency repairs.
To achieve this you need
- Prior certification: Mate Fishing Vessel Unlimited (MFV-U) or equivalent
- Sea Service: 12 months on fishing vessels 12m+ operating outside restricted limits while holding MFV-U and operating as Skipper or Officer in charge of navigational watch
- NZ Diploma in Fishing Vessel Operations (Level 6) with fishing vessel skipper strand
- STCW-F basic safety training
- Advanced fire fighting
- Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats] (other than fast rescue boats)
- Medical first aid
- GMDSS
