How to make a submission

Submissions must be made through Parliament’s website. Feel free to keep this guide handy while you go through the submission process.

Click here to make a submission on the Fisheries Amendment Bill (will open in a new tab).

1. Fill in your personal details

This is so the Select Committee knows you are a real person. You can also submit on behalf of your organisation or company.

2. Decide if you wish to appear in person and make an oral submission to the Select Committee
You are not required to do this if you do not wish to. Although not everyone who ticks ‘yes’ will be selected to speak, we would highly encourage everyone to tick ‘yes’ to make sure the industry perspective is represented. We can offer support for anyone appearing in front of the Committee so that you feel prepared.

Sample submission wording

Box 1: I/We wish to make the following comments

Tell them a little bit about your yourself like your name, your occupation and why seafood and the seafood industry is important to you. This only needs to be one or two sentences for context.

Tell them why you SUPPORT this Bill. For example, you could say:

  • This Bill strengthens and modernises our fisheries management system for all New Zealanders.
  • The Bill improves efficiency by improving the use of the data and information being collected.
  • Sustainability remains the cornerstone of New Zealand’s fisheries.

Some specific issues you could address:

  • I/We support the proposed tools to enhance increase the certainty, efficiency, and responsiveness of our processes to set catch limits. We consider these improve our ability to ensure the sustainability of our stocks and deliver benefits to all New Zealanders without affecting the ability for everyone to have their say.
  • I/We support the proposals that provide greater protection for on-board camera footage – a vessel is a workplace and a home and privacy must be assured. Regulators have access to this footage to carry out their roles and that is sufficient.
  • I/We support the changes to the landings and discards framework that strengthen incentives to reduce waste and leverage the on-board camera programme.

Box 2: I/We wish to make the following recommendations

I SUPPORT this Bill and ask the Select Committee to recommend this Bill be passed with the amendments as suggested by Seafood New Zealand.
